Jean Valjean leaves prison after 20 years. He was imprisoned for having stolen bread for his sister and her children. He is under conditional liberty and nobody gives him food and bed; nobody, except the Bishop of Digne. Valjean steals somo silver from the Bishop's house, he is arrested and brought back to the Bishop, who forgives him and gives him a pair of silver candelabrums. This fact changes Valjean into a new man. He becomes the mayor of the small town of Montreuil-sur-mer, where he opens a factory to give job to people. A worker, Fantine, is dismissed from the factory, without Valjean's knowledge, because she is known to have a natural daughter. Her poverty and the necessity to send money to the Thernardiers, a couple with whom her daughter Cosette is in charged, forces her to prostitution. Fantine is imprisoned by inspector Javert, who has recognized Valjean as an ex-convict and has denounced him. Fantine dies and Valjean promises her that he will recover her daughter and will take care of her as her own father, but he has to run away because of Javert's denounce. Valjean finds Cosette, who has been bad treated by the Thernardiers who are thieves, and hides with her in a convent, where she grows up, while studying with the nuns. Valjean and Cosette leave the convent and went to live to a house in Paris. Cosette falls in love with a student, Mario, who is the neighbor of the impoverished Thernardiers, whose daughter Eponina is in love with Mario. Mario joins the revolutionaries in a barricade where Eponina saves him from being shot, and she herself dies. Valjean finds Javert who has been caught in the barricade and to Javert's astonishment, Valjean releases him. Valjean saves the injured Mario from the barricades, carrying his body through Paris's sewers, but Javert finally catches him, giving him chance of leaving Mario at his grandfather's home and to say goodbye to Cosette. But Javert lets Valjean go and he threw himself to the river where he drowns. Mario and Cosette get married and when Valjean confesses Mario that he is not Cosette's real father and he is an ex-convict, Mario despises him and ask him not to see Cosette again. Then Mario learns that Valjean was the man who saved him from the barricade and he and Cosette go to look for him just to find him about to die. Jean Valjean dies surrounded by Cosette and Mario.
